Why do Restaurant Tables Rock?: Design Mysteries Series
You sit down at a table in a beautiful café, relishing a short respite from the tedium of work, the server asks what you would like and brings you a lovely cup of coffee, sets it down and presto, the table rocks and the coffee sloshes all over you and the table. Many napkins later amid a profusion of apologies you receive another cup of coffee. How many times has this scenario played out for you? How many coasters, napkins, matchbooks, chopsticks does it take to bring the table under control? Even as everyone seated within reaching distance has weighed in on the engineering necessary to “level” the table it still teeters on the brink.
This is one of those “design problems” we know how to fix, The Quakers invented the swiveling, adjustable chair glide in 1852 and there are 100’s of adjustable table glides available from the incredibly inexpensive to the costly but easily adjustable, with a coin, solution.
So, why don’t we employ these simple inexpensive solutions to eliminate a constantly annoying “problem?” Beats me! Must have something to do with secret CEO Golden Parachute clauses, since there is no other explanation short of just being cheap. Here are a few “SOLUTIONS” and places to purchase them.
The Flat table base self-levels by sensing the uneven flooring and compensating for it by pumping fluid through a series of pipes adjusting the height of the table’s feet to make it stable.
Brilliant! The table is level and doesn’t wobble!
